"America is an idea as much as it is a country."

What does this quote mean? Thinking about what we have learned this week (What is America?; What does an American look like?; Define Your Nation) analyze the quote.

Your organized and thoughtful. It must be at least 100 words.

  1. I think that this quote means that people mistake it for the country it is. Most people take it for granite. America is more than a country it’s a place where people are proud to live. Many might say America can be an idea but it’s more than that. But I have to agree the economy is really bad and they need to change that. And another thing is that America doesn’t make anything in America and that makes me mad.

  2. I think that this quote means that everyone has their own idea of America. When people think of America, it is thought of as this wonderful place, the land of the free and the home of the brave. But America really isnt great to everyone. In reality, there are alot of poor people, and people struggling to stay alive, and some people dont have anything. People in other countries that dream of coming to America and everything, they think its great and they expect great things. But really living here, there are hard times and good times, but I don’t think America is everything people say it is. So the idea of America isnt always what America really is to some people.

  3. This quote means that America is not only a place for people to live, but it is also a place for everyone to share their ideas with one another. America was founded as a place for the English to practice new things, have religious tolerance, and social equality. Throughout American history, ideas have been shared across the world, and without these ideas, America would not be as advanced as it is today. Our whole society is based on ideas, and it's the people that actually take action to bring their ideas to life that make America a country. Everyone has their own idea of what America actually is as a whole. To foreigners it's a place where they can come over and have a new fresh start, a place where they can make a whole new them. Whereas, to some people it's a place where the law is bias and the economy is completely and totally messed up.

  4. The country is a country as much as and idea because it I'd how we get our appearance to the other surounding countries as well as how we view ourselves. An American looks like q very unique, independent, patriotic citizen of he united states of America. With no specific race or religion, or accent; America is a very unique diverse combination of people living together as a whole. The American image is an American with a very diverse back ground. This is an image of a common American in the united states of America, we as americans are very unique and free. Like a giant tossed salad, lots of different unique people all mixed together living all as one.

  5. This quote describes how America is composed of many different cultures and beliefs. By saying that it is an idea as much as a country you are able to show how everyone in America is different and we are not always what one might expect. You may think of the typical American who lives in a big house with a white picket fence and has two kids, but it really isn't that black and white. In our country you have so many differences that it is hard to actually put us in one category. with all these differences we may be confusing but we are also unique.

  6. To me this quote means that America has this reputation of the normal American family with the white picket fence and a white house. It’s a mental picture in their minds that set us apart like this, its an idea. But in reality, not everyone has the white picket fence and perfect white house to live in. All Americans live different and unique lives. Its how they choose to live, and what they do to live in the lifestyle they have. America is a free country where we are free to believe in the religion we choose, we have a say in government, and where its an honor and privilege to be an American.

  7. I think that this quote means that America is made up of everyone's ideas and dreams of a perfect country. America is a place where people can express themselves and live their own free lives how they choose. America was founded on an idea of freedom and I feel that idea stands true today. I think that many people view America as the land of opportunity and I think that there were greater opportunities in the past than there are now with the way our economy has been but, I still believe that America is the greatest nation in the world.

  8. I think the quote “America is an idea just as much as it as a country” is completely true. I think it means that America’s reputation is just as important as the country itself. America has a huge debt and is involved in a lot of wars. But that doesn’t matter because we’re the best country to live in, right? When some people hear the word “America”, the first thing they think of is freedom. To others, the only thing that comes to mind is that America is the place where they live their average lives with their average families. America is supposed to be the place where everyone is equal regardless of their race, religion, or beliefs. But is it really?

  11. To some people America is a country. To others it’s an idea. I believe that it is both. America as a country is where we live. As an idea America is who we are. It depends on what situation someone is in that supports their idea of what America is. Even what part of the country you think about can have different effects on your opinion of America. America it’s self and the thought within in it builds our country. Different ideas build our country different ways. So America as an idea and in its self as a country are essential the same thing. America is whatever a person thinks it is because we can’t tell someone what to think it’s their opinion.

  12. You know how people say that they come over to America for the American dream, where you have a big white house with a picket fence & freedom. That’s the Idea part of the quote. The country part of the quote is that in reality there’s a lot of poverty in America, & we have mixed cultures. Everybody believes in what they want. Yes there are benefits but there’s also a down side. Everybody strives for the “American dream” & gets it but on the flip side some people just can’t make it. So, that’s how I view this quote.
