Was the American Revolution inevitable?

When the French and Indian War ended the British government sought to establish firmer control over the American colonies. The Colonists, however, use to fending for themselves, sought to handle their internal affairs. The claimed that since they were without a voice in Parliment, they needed their colonial assemblies to assert their rights as Englishmen.

We have talked about many social, political and economic causes of the American Revolution. Why do you think the American Revolution happened? Was it a war of principle or self-interest? Was the war inevitable since the establishment of the colonies? In a 3.8 paragraph, discuss why the American Revolution happened. Be sure to think about the reasons we have talked about in class and use concrete evidence to support your beliefs.

  1. Many issues led up to the American Revolution. I think the American Revolution happened because the colonists was tried of their rights being taken away from them. The British government felt they had the power to walk all over the colonists because they had higher power. I feel the American Revolution was BOTH a war of principle and self-interest. The price of freedom has no value and as such can not be merited any value other than freedom its self. In a way, the war was inevitable because Britain kept pushing taxes on the colonists. The colonists got so tired of their rights being taken that the felt the need to take up for themselves. Britain felt that the Americans needed to pay them for the French and Indian War, thats why they taxed everything. The war was inevitable because of this.

  3. I believe the war was a war of principle and self interest. one reason I think this is because the colonists were not happy with getting all their rights taken away and being taxed without their consent, they felt they deserved all the same rights as englishmen. I also believe this because they werent happy with having to take in and care for britsih soldiers. The colonists were not pleased with the stamp act that added a tax on nearly all "everyday" transactions and they didnt have a say. The war was inevitable because britian kept taxing the colonists.

  4. There was a lot of stuff that happened before the American Revolution. I think it happened because the British put taxes on items and they were too high that people couldn't afford them. I think it was self-interest. I think this because the British put taxes on things so they could get money. Yes the war was inevitable. It was because the colonists got mad at the British for taxing too much of their products.

  5. i think the American Revolution was inevitable and a war of principle and self interest. It happened because the British kept taxing the colonist and they got tired of it. the British thought they had all of the power so they could just walk all over the colonists. the colonists believed in "taxation without representation". The colonists felt like they shouldn't be taxed because they didn't have a say in parliament. The colonists were also angry for having to house & feed the British soldiers. So they rebelled of course. So, yes the American revolution was inevitable.

  6. I think the American Revolutionary war happened because the colonist figured if we're not gonna get a say in parliament why should we pay taxes and follow laws made up by a government so far away. I think it was a war of both principle and self-interest. It was a war of principle because being taxed without representation is simply unfair. It was a war of self-interest because colonist wanted the same rights as englishmen. This war inevitable because the colonies were not gonna just keep letting Britain keep taxing them and enforcing unfair laws. Great Britain fought a war, and as a result were put into dept. their solution to this was to place many taxes on the colonies. Therefore making them pay for the war. The colonies grew tired of being bullied and rebelled.

  7. I believe many issues led up to the American Revolution. The Revolution happened because the Americancolonists were fed up with having all thier rights taken from them. The British Parliament was making laws without the colonist consent, and the colonists wer tired of being taxed without reprsentation. The American Revollution was also caused by self-interest. I believe this to be so because the colonists wanted the same rights as the Englishmen. This war was inevitable because the colonists weren't just going to move aside and let Parliament do whatever they wanted them to do.

  8. Certain events occurred in history that led up to the American Revolution. I think that the American Revolution happened because Brittan imposed taxes on the early American colonist. Brittan wanted to make money off of them. I believe it was a war of principle because England was taking advantage of the colonist. England was making a profit from the colonist as a buyer and a seller. Yes the war was inevitable since the establishment of the colonies. The colonies were growing and they needed their own government and their own laws. Summing all this up, the American colonists was fed up with taxation, tired of English laws, and wanted to become an independent nation.

  9. I think that the american revolution happened because the colonists just finally realized that they werent gonna listen to britain because they were so far away and they were making laws that were completely unfair and the colonies had no control over it. and the colonists just got tired of it and took a stand. I think the war was kind of a war of self interest , because the colonists wanted to stand up for themselves. I think that with britain making crazy laws like that , then the war was inevitable , it was gonna happen anyways.

  10. I believe that the American revolution was completely inevitable.
When someone is told that they can't have something or are not allowed to do something that they want to do, then they are going to want to do what they can to obtain the thing or complete the action.
The colonists were told not to trade with countries other than Britain, they traded with countries other than Britain.
People don't want what they consider to be unnecessary restrictions placed on them or effecting them.
The Boston tea party goes to prove this. Colonists were taxed, they didn't want the tax so they acted.
Even if the restriction is necessary or not, people will act according to their will.
Britain needed tax money to fund the army that protected the colonists, the colonists did not want to pay the tax but needed protection against Indians.
The american revolution was inevitable because both sides wanted something and neither one wanted to give that thing to the other. There was personal gain involved and there was necessity involved. with all of these variables, the American revolution happened and that is that.

  11. I think the American Revolution was inevitable. There were many problems that led to the revolution. One of which was the Navigation Acts. The Navigation Acts put restrictions on the colonies trading and was a form of control from Britain. Another issue that led to the revolution was the Coercive Acts. The Coercive acts closed the harbor until the damages from the tea party were paid. Once again, Britain was controlling the colonies. Lastly, the Olive Branch Petition Led to the war. The Olive Branch Petition was the last attempt to avoid the war. After King George III rejected the petition, the colonists realized that they had to get their independence from Britain. Basically, The war was inevitable was because Britain tried to control every aspect of the colonist's lives.

  12. The American Revolution began for many reasons, some include the Acts, the Boston Tea Party, and the Boston Massacre . The first reason for the American Revolution is because of all the Acts the British placed on the colonist. They didn't want to pay taxes on everything so they would boycott goods and start purchasing less of others. Another reason for the American Revolution is because of the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Tea Party was a result of the British placing a tax on tea and harboring it in the Boston harbor until it was paid for. The last reason the American Revolution was caused was because of the Boston Massacre. This event happened because some kids started to throw snowballs at the redcoats and others joined in and the redcoats got angry and got in formation and fired even though ordered not to. The American Revolution had other causes but these are the one I think are most important.

  13. The American revelation was started because it was nessasary for the colonies to supply them selves with what they need, when they separated from England. The colonies separated based on the self intrests of the colonies so the colonies could prosper to it's peak. The war was completely unnessasary on britians part because they could allow the colonies leave in peace instead of trying to force the colonies to stay. The colonies had the complete right to rebel and fight for they're beliefs. The colonies where completely morally right in all that they did. The war was 100% nessasary for the colonies other wise the British would treat them like dogs and walk all over them. The war could've been avoided if britians would allow the colonies to seperate and form they're own country.
